5 Quick Ideas to Practice Reading Skills on the Go!

Where do you get a minute to practice reading skills with your kids?  Life is a juggling act! There are so many things to do and not enough time to do any of them. When my daughter was young, I used to make lists for everything so that when I had time to plan a project or do something that we had time for, I’d have a list so I wasn’t trying at the moment to find something to do. I bought books of activities and wrote down the ones that I loved the most.  These are some quick ideas to teach some reading skills on the go! In the car, in the tub, in a restaurant, while walking, while grocery shopping, while clothes shopping, at the park, are all times to quickly practice a reading skill or two without your child even knowing!

1. In the Car

100 Sing-Along Songs for Kids: This CD has songs such as Teensy, Weensy Spider, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, The More We Get Together, etc.

Sing a new song that they don’t know so they have to read the words as you’re singing!!

2. Anywhere and anytime: Rhyming game – This is a document that has word families/rhyming words.  You can have a competition with your child on who can rhyme the most words.
For example, How many words rhyme with bat?
Start with each letter of the alphabet

3. While Walking

Write a 2 line poem

My name is Sue!
My favorite color is blue!

(or keep adding lines if you’d like)

4. In the Tub

Rewrite a story or song!

Ring around the Rosey, Pocket full of posey.
Ashes, Ashes, we all fall down.

New Version:
Pears, kiwi, and blueberries – grapes, kiwi, and strawberries.
Fruits, fruits, we need to eat them up!

5. At a Restaurant

Read the Menu
Write down your order

A few minutes here and there will help your child keep up with their reading skills! For more ways to practice reading skills, click here. As always, if you have any questions about books, or reading in general, please leave a comment or email me at jean@reading-love.com.
